Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg
My name is Emily Akikodjiwan Brascoupe-Hoefler, I am a mixed media artist and educator who creates pieces of art inspired by my family, community teachings and my experiences on the land. Through the process of reclaiming lost art practices and traditions, I weaved new cultural understanding and healing into my work.
I have a vision of promoting First Nation culture and increasing representation in the public space. When I am not creating, I am working as a policy analyst. Currently, I live in unceded Anishinabe territory with my husband and three children. I am a member of Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg and have Anishinabe, Haudenosaunee, and Irish ancestors. I studied visual art at the University of Western Ontario and recently completed 2 programs with the Indigenous Friends Association - Art and Healing and Reclaiming Technology. I have been practicing and learning art from my father and other artists and makers from Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg. Myself and my sisters, Claire and Mairi Brascoupe, have been creating public art around the Ottawa area, including a Seven Grandfather Teachings mural and the Wisdom Mural with more exciting projects to come!
