Inuvialuit-Cree, Alberta
I am an Inuvialuit-Cree woman residing in Treaty 6 territory. I was born and raised on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, so I resonate heavily with Haida art, although I identify strongly with my Inuvialuit side from the Arctic. I love to paint and sew, fortunately I'm great at sewing.
Not long before my Inuvialuit-Cree mother died in 2015, she was thrilled to find that I had been “bitten by the sewing bug”, and she promptly purchased my first little sewing machine for me. I had the honor of learning the sewing basics from my mom, and of course her own techniques, and I could always turn to her for answers in sewing, and in life. When I lost my mom I lost all passion for sewing. But after 9 years of healing, I was recently able to find a desire to sew again. Now every time I sit down at my machine, I feel very close to my mom, and it fuels that passion all over again. My creations started as hair accessories and scarves and have evolved into handmade quilts, purses, bags, clothes, ribbon skirts and so much more.
