Community and Land Based Learning

IAC is always proud to walk in community at Akwesasne Mohawk Territory. Our work with Haudenosaunee Universe and Oherokon is vital. By providing local resources and arts professionals, we are able to elevate the existing programming to include more hands on traditional arts education while bringing the community together. The IAC's contribution to these projects is funded by Canada Council for the Arts.

Haudenosaunee Universe

Mission: At Haudenosaunee Universe, the mission is to foster holistic education by integrating the ancient wisdom of the Haudenosaunee people with contemporary learning. HU is committed to nurturing individuals who are deeply connected to their cultural roots while being equipped to engage with the world in ways that promote peace, sustainability, and mutual respect. Through a combination of educational lectures, immersive cultural experiences, traditional arts, wellness practices, and dialogue circles, HU creates a transformative space where knowledge, healing, and leadership are passed down for the benefit of future generations and all of humanity.

Vision: To cultivate a generation of students who are empowered with the knowledge, language, culture, traditions, and history of the Haudenosaunee people, enabling them to become ambassadors of peace and wisdom. Through these teachings, Haudenosaunee Universe will serve as a beacon of hope and harmony—a Mecca of peace—for the world to witness and embrace, inspiring communities globally to heal, connect, and thrive in unity.

Oherokon • Under The Husk

Ohero:kon "Under the Husk" Rites of Passage emerged out of a pursuit to inspire and support the community for the love of our children, and a desire for actions to speak louder than words. Established in 2000 in the Ahkwesásne Mohawk Nation, we’re a grassroots, community-based Indigenous organization driven by progressive ideas, bold actions, and a strong foundation of cultural support. Beginning with 7 youth who fasted on top of a mountain in our sister community of Kahnenhsatá:ke, we have now supported more than 1000 people to be part of this process including youth, families, Elders, community members and allies - including the growth of Oheró:kon currently taking place in other communities across the Ratinonhshón:ni/Haudenosaunee Confederacy.

Oheró:kon reconstructs ancient cultural knowledge of "coming of age" as a preparatory process for youth as they transition to adulthood. We offer age-appropriate, culturally-based teachings and activities in safe, sacred spaces to nurture the emotional and physical well-being of Onkwehón:we (Indigenous) youth, families and communities. contact us to learn more and get involved.
