Kwe' Teluisi Shiajan Caplin. N’in tleyawi Mi'kma'ki.

Hello My name is Shiajan Caplin. I am a L’nu Mikmaw woman from Eel River Bar First Nation New Brunswick, Turtle Island.

I've just attended my first group gathering last fall with amazing group and have been moving forward and up ever since.

Creating came to me one day about 5 years ago when I always picking birch and trees and plants and trying to figure out how I could use these medicines. I loved the woods and water and tried to be around them as much as I could. Another day a porcupine “matues” was put in front of me and I was curious as to how I could use his medicine with all the feathers and birch I was collecting… and that’s how it all began. In a trying time it gave me a way to nurture my spirit, and providing a sense of purpose and joy.

Although my first piece took a year of picking it up and down I finally completed and will only pass it on to my kids when the time comes! Each time I pick up my colorful quills and birch a sense of calm brings me to a place away from our world of chaos.

So I hope the person who receives this piece gets what they are in need of to feed their spirit as well.

We’lalioq, Shiajan
