Beading is a form of self-expression, allowing me to feel more connected to my family and Cree heritage. My work combines traditional beading elements of my ancestors with more contemporary jewelry styles. Growing up, I was always in admiration of the various beadwork gifted to me by my aunties, and the immense dedication, beauty, and creativity they put into every piece. While my mom was teaching up north, my aunties taught my mom how to bead. She amassed her own large collection of beaded earrings which I highly coveted while growing up. Several years ago, I taught myself to bead earrings by studying my aunties' and mom's beadwork. Eventually, I developed my own unique style but still incorporate designs that my family lovingly shares with me. My intention is to continue the tradition of creating heirloom pieces that can be passed down through generations. My pieces are non-ceremonial and can be worn proudly by anyone to showcase their respect and support for Indigenous artists and craftspeople. As a tribute to my aunties and the cherished place aunties hold in Indigenous families and communities, I named my company “nitōsis” (Cree for “auntie”).
