Consulting Services
The IAC is a volunteer run charity. In asking for our time, please help us contribute resources to our organization. The fees are negotiable as we work to help everyone to the best of our ability.
The IAC is available to consult and support on several issues that circle around Indigenous arts and cultures including but not limited to:
Cultural and Identity Guidance
- Understanding distinctions among First Nations, Inuit, and Métis identities.
- Learning how to centre Indigenous voices rather than speaking for them.
- Verifying the authenticity of Indigenous artists, makers, or advisors.
- Learning how to introduce or describe Indigenous involvement appropriately.
- Avoiding pan-Indigenous generalizations or mixing of nations’ symbolism, imagery and cultures.
Representation and Creative Work
- Proper use of Indigenous art, designs, languages, and stories.
- Determining what constitutes cultural appropriation versus collaboration/appreciation.
- Ensuring visual and cultural accuracy in branding, décor, or media.
- Building equitable partnerships with Indigenous artists, performers, or consultants.
Event and Ceremony Inclusion and Equity
- Event planning, funding and vendor fees: when to create spaces that serve to enable marginalized survivor cultures, when to charge vendor fees, affordable options for everyone.
- Event planning and making safe spaces for Indigenous visitors, vendors and speakers.
- Inviting Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members in the right way (honoraria, introductions, gifts).
- Structuring events with acknowledgments, openings, or teachings in a good way.
- Providing space and respect for ceremony (smudging, drumming, prayer, etc.).
- Managing logistics respectfully — e.g., tobacco offering, food considerations, time for reflection.
Land Acknowledgements
- Understanding the intentions of land acknowledgements.
- Addressing responsibilities within land acknowledgements.
- Communicating human emotions and empathy via land acknowledgements.
