Hello! My name is Bre, and though I was born in Nova Scotia, White Horse Plains is where I call home. I am a two-spirit Michif-Otipemisiwak creative based in Treaty 1 territory. I am an interdisciplinary and highly experimental artist who is always seeking out brave new ways to embody Indigenous tradition, values, and power in a complicated, ever-evolving contemporary world.
Much of my work centres at the crossroads of painting and design. I hold Woodlands-type stylings very close to my heart, finding great measures of guidance in the art and writings of Norval Morrisseau. The storytelling of my peers and community deeply influences my intuitive workings, with many traditional guides and symbols (Grandfather Coyote, Grandmother Horse) finding themselves embodied in various places throughout my creations.
Connection is everything when it comes to what I do. To the Michif, especially the women, gathering and visiting is medicine. It is powerful, even more so when combined with active creativity whilst around the kitchen table. I make my best work when I am surrounded by those I love. I am proud to have been able to learn from local Elders and, with their blessings, I hope to continue to breathe life and colour to their stories for the rest of my days.
