My name is Kayla-Jazz, I am an Inuk woman from Kuujjuaq, Nunavik. I started beading when I was 9 years old, the first thing I made was a qaurutik (head piece) with a group of girls my age. At the age of 12, I had someone from my community teach me the basics of how to make beaded earrings.

From then on, I started exploring different beading techniques by myself and discovered that this was more than just a hobby. I enjoyed it so much, I would sometimes bring my beads to school and bead during recess and sometimes in class (when the teacher was alright with it, not all of them were).

I began mentoring my younger cousins on how to bead - the youngest one was 4. I love being able to teach those around me how to bead. My sisters are also a big part of my beading journey, they've encouraged me and have been part of my biggest supporters since the beginning. I made an Instagram beading account and named it "August Beadwork" in honour of my dad who passed away (he was born in the month of August). Beading helped me a lot mentally and emotionally for a long time. I believe that beading is medicine and I am grateful that not only do I get to enjoy my creations, but others as well.
