Marjorie Kaniehtonkie Skidders is a member of the Bear Clan of the Mohawk of Akwesasne. Marjorie has come full circle in her career as an artist, starting out with a bachelor’s degree in art and turning that into a 25-year career in education as a teacher, director, Indigenous content curriculum writer and as a school principal.

After retiring, Kaniehtonkie has returned back to her roots as an artist focusing on writing and photography. She started showing her photos in native art markets in 2017. Encouraged by the public’s response, she entered her photos in the Ganondagan Museum’s Hodinöhsö:ni’ Art Show and caught the eye of New York State Museum representative. The NYS Museum purchased one of her photographs for their permanent collection. She is also an award-winning photographer, earning first and second place at the prestigious Adirondack Abenaki and Mohawk Art Market in 2019 and first place in 2018. Kaniehtonkie is a proud Ista of four children and seven grandchildren, with one on the way. Kaniehtonkie is currently editor of Indian Time Newspaper located in the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation Territory.
