Hi, I'm Mel!

I’m a former radio broadcaster who has followed my entrepreneurial dream. I am an Indigenous woman (Inuk, Beneficiary of Nunatsiavut) who grew up in Labrador and now live in Nova Scotia. I spent 17 years as a broadcaster, promotions manager, and brand manager in the radio industry. Before that, I spent a summer as a geologist after getting my BSc, but the mosquitoes were just too much!

On paper, I started my shop at 4 years old when I began making handmade cards for my family. My love of making started at home with my Nan, my maternal grandmother. We practiced everything together from colouring to beading to baking to sewing to plastic canvas. My Nan was skilled in grass work and along with my Aunties, I was able to take part in and absorb so much handmade knowledge. That handmade ethos is with me today.

In my work, I focus on sustainability and using all my materials to the fullest. The same thing I was taught with traditional food, I bring to my work and materials: Take only what you need and use all that you take. I strive to work in small batches to minimize waste and many of my items are made to order. My time spent crafting with my Nan instilled in me a love of working with my hands and heart to create beautiful and meaningful things.

Today, my primary medium is paper. I sometimes initiate work digitally and sometimes begin with a paper sketch. I create greeting cards, art prints, bookmarks and other gifts to share love on paper. I inject humour and everyday language to create a modern twist on typical greetings.
