I've worked with a few artists within the Citizen Potawatomi Nation community, exchanging knowledge about beading, symbolism, and material sourcing. Through my work, I hope to embody the adaptation of Indigenous practice to local resources. Personally, I've lived in Florida most of my life. We do not have access to many plant medicines and resources that my Potawatomi relatives had access to when developing such rich traditions in sweetgrass work, birchbark use, etc. I strive to source all of my natural materials locally or second-hand, with an emphasis on not using any plastic in my work. I believe that many modern indigenous peoples are figuring out how to navigate cultural growth while not having direct access to in-person reservation visitations nor the privilege of being raised to practice traditional rituals and arts. I hope, as I continue my journey growing in my Potawatomi culture, that my work reflects the creativity and adaptation that I use to merge deep-rooted traditions with modern materials and resources.
