My name is Rose Moses. I am Ojibwe from the Henvey Inlet Band. I am a self taught artist and have drawn on the inspiration of other First Nations artists. I up cycle a lot of my materials when I am working on a project so my beadwork will have up cycled frames and the felt is usually from a coat. For my dolls, I may cut up recycled clothing to make clothing for my dolls.
Both Beading and Doll making have been part of the First Nations culture for a long time and it possesses great beauty and I consider working in it as sacred work. I have been making dolls for over 30 years and I go into schools to teach doll making. I just recently taught myself how to bead and have enjoyed putting bead-work in frames, on my dolls and even on my own clothing.
Workshops
I do several workshops with schools, communities, events etc. I get called to present to schools to teach First Nation Dollmaking...we begin with a history of dollmaking and how it pertains to First Nations culture...then we touch and discuss how Indigenous dolls are made and put together...from my private collection of dolls. After this we look at different items used in dollmaking and see how they are used and then we make our own dolls...This workshop takes about 2 hours. I also get called in to schools to present on residential schools and my personal journey -for this workshop I rely on my collage work which has art and text as it pertains to residential schools. This workshop takes about 2 hours. And, the other workshop I have been asked to do is quiltmaking and I have put together a workshop that students create a wall hanging out of fabric depicting the Algonquin Creation story. This workshop may take a few days at one hour each.
