Leanne Elson

Inuit, New Brunswick

Hi There! My name is Leanne Elson and I am Inuit from Labrador. I have been living in Fredericton for over 8 years and have been crafting since I was old enough to sew. I started learning to sew moccasins through my aunt, and with practice and help, I have moved on to mittens and mukluks, and then to jewelry!

Though I am located in New Brunswick, my Inuit roots and culture are still a big part of my life and who I am. I try to incorporate as much as I can from nature into useable/wearable products. I like to use many parts of an animal, so nothing goes to waste. Wild meat (such as Seal and waterfowl) was and still are a big part of my diet, so you will see that my favorite material to work with is typically sealskin, feathers and antlers. I also had the opportunity to learn caribou tufting from an Elder in my community and have since incorporated tufting into my work when possible.

Only recently have I put a name to my crafts, “Rugged Coast Crafts.” I chose this name because the places I spent growing up (Spotted Island and Black Tickle, Labrador) were rugged, barren, and were the best places in the world to explore nature and live off the land and sea.
