Cree, Saskatchewan
Being a Rocky Cree woman from northern Saskatchewan, it is important for me and my people to carry on our traditions including our long lost art. After years of admiring the work of Angelique Merasty and watching videos of her creating her bitings, I wanted to try to keep this traditional art form alive. With encouragement from my friends, family, and elders, I continue to create my art.
In order to keep the tradition alive and to teach non-first Nations people more of our culture, I host small presentations around my home community. I also encourage youth to try to create the art to continue our traditions.
For hundreds of years my ancestors have been biting on bark to tell stories, express themselves, pass on messages and to share their art. My work with the layers of bark are like pages in a book - they tell my story.
