Laura McLaughlin
Métis
Laura Mclaughlin (NEE Jobin) was born in Prairie Echo Alberta (Great Lakes Country) to Ambrose and Nora Jobin. She learned to sew at a young age from her aunt Lena Jobin. As an adult, Laura moved with her 4 small children to Edmonton Alberta where she put her sewing skills to work as a seamstress for various stores.
As her children grew and moved away from home, Laura's passion for her Metis heritage lead her to designing and creating traditional ribbon shirts and Indigenous-inspired clothing and accessories. Laura is featured at the Royal Alberta Museum in the Human History Hall, Metis display. She has contributed her art to the British Museum in London as well as the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, Americas in Washington DC.
